Forum on Immigration

New North Church will host a public forum on immigration on Sunday, November 10 at 2:00.

The forum will explore the perspectives of four Central American nations, ranging from the root causes of flight migration to the political implications in the relations of each involved country with the United States.  We will also hear of the efforts to provide resources and opportunities for sustainable development as an alternative to migration.  A question-and-answer session will close out the discussion.

Ms. Lucy Luna Guzman, Director of the Salvadoran Association for Rural Health (also called ASAPROSAR), will tell of her work to help adolescent youth in El Salvador.  ASAPROSAR’s mission is to improve the quality of life for the neediest families, especially in rural areas and marginalized urban settings.  In addition to her current role in ASAPROSAR, Lucy is a member of the Network for the Defense of the Rights of Children and Adolescents in El Salvador, as well as the Latin American Network for the rights of children and adolescents.

Four consuls general will also speak: Alberto Fierro Garza, Consul General of Mexico; Ena Peña, Consul General of El Salvador; Jorge Alberto Figueroa, Consul General of Guatemala; and Alejandra Zelaya, Consul General of Honduras.  Each country faces its own set of challenges both at home and regionally.

Rev. Steven Aucella, pastor at New North Church, said, “This is a unique opportunity to hear the story from the other side.  The problem is not centered solely in Tijuana or along the Arizona border.  It is a complicated, multi-faceted combination of circumstances that cause people to flee their homes and native countries.”

The forum is sponsored by the Southeast Area Mission & Justice team, a part of the Southern New England Conference of the United Church of Christ.  A $5.00 donation to help offset costs is requested.
